This is the virtual gallery for Gallery Bergen’s new exhibition of animation, video and game design by alumni of Bergen Community College. In creating this exhibition we sought to present artwork that is suited to online presentation – work that was designed with an online viewer experience in mind. Beginning with these simple parameters, we were led to some of the most stunning and engaging art that has been produced by students coming out of BCC’s Visual Arts program.
Among these accomplished artists are the Emmy Award winning team, Aggressive, led by BCC alumni Alex Topaller and Dan Shapiro. They have created music videos for Michael Jackson, the Stone Temple Pilots, and most recently, Alicia Keys in UNSTAGED, an exciting new series using XR SetMapping technologies sponsored by American Express. Their clients include the biggest names in the corporate firmament.
Andrew Gelman has taken a more traditional path in the creation of his award winning cartoon animation, Roadkill Rangers. Clotilde McHugh and Ali Asghar Jamali have specialized in music videos for technical progressive death metal and hip hop, respectively, while Stephen Gonzalez studied computer animation and 3D modeling at BCC and has returned as an adjunct professor in game design. This rapidly developing and underappreciated art form represents perhaps the brightest future of art experiences as it combines elements of design, animation, narration and story development, sound modeling, and sophisticated programming.
Arguably the most emblematic of our college’s soulful worldview and the inspiring, nurturing studio of Professor Francis Schmidt is the trajectory of Christian Dobrev. Christian was a rising star animator and 3D modeler who transferred from BCC to the Fashion Institute of Technology. FIT used his images in their catalogue and publicity materials. However, Christian has now chosen to study Arctic Nursing; he is in his third year of nursing school at Dalhousie School of Nursing, Nunavut Arctic College, Iqaluit, Nunavut (Canada.) We could not be more proud of our alumni as they inspire all of us with their fearless creative spirit.
